Our Process

STEP 1

Sourcing Organic-Rich Soil

Acquiring soil reserves with high organic matter content is the most critical factor in attaining soil product quality. We start with acres of naturally fertile peat reserves in Indiana’s Kankakee River Valley in LaPorte and Starke counties.

These soil reserves have hypnum peat, reed sedge peat, and houghton peat as their primary parent materials.  The high organic content of these parent materials is the primary reason Talon’s soil products are vastly superior.

Organic matter content is not enhanced by adding foundry sand, sawdust, bark fines, ground-up leaves, or clay, or numerous other unnamed “forest products”.  Talon’s  soil reserves are simply Nature’s best, enabling Talon to produce soil products with the highest organic content available in the marketplace

Tested. Trusted. And truly organic.

STEP 2

Harvested With Care

At Talon Terra, proper soil harvesting is just as important as soil selection. After reserves are acquired, we wait 1 to 2 years before harvesting. This resting period allows any residual fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides from past farming activity to fully dissipate, ensuring clean, uncontaminated soil.

We control every step of the harvesting process. Our techniques include field-drying the soil to the ideal moisture level, followed by careful mounding to preserve that balance before transport.

Why so much care? Because moisture content matters, and we make sure your soil performs the moment you open the bag.

STEP 3

Handled With Precision

Once harvested, the soil is carefully transported by our employees from the field to our packaging plant near Kingsbury, Indiana. To preserve the ideal moisture level, it’s properly mounded both in the field and again at the production facility.

After moisture testing, the soil passes through trommel machines with 0.75-inch screens to remove debris. Then, unlike most soil companies, we hand-mix every batch using a small front-end loader. We never use automated mixing equipment. Pride and individual responsibility are built into every scoop.

Before bagging, the moisture content is tested again to ensure consistency. Why? Because moisture affects weight and quality. Many competitor bags include excess water weight. Talon Terra products deliver 30–31 pounds of high organic matter soil with ideal moisture content around 25% in every 0.75 cubic foot bag.

STEP 4

Packed for Consistency

Each bag is automatically filled, weighed, and sealed with precision, using state-of-the-art Hamer bagging machines. Bag volume, weight, PH and moisture content are carefully monitored throughout the process to ensure consistency across every batch.

Talon Terra uses both the Hamer 3100 and Hamer 2080 automatic machines, paired with robotic palletizing, to package its soil mixes efficiently and accurately.

When retailers and growers open a bag of Talon Terra soil, they should know exactly what to expect every time.

STEP 5

Delivered With Care

We don’t just make the soil, our products are delivered by Talon Terra drivers and third-party carriers. Most shipments arrive within 96 hours, even during peak season.

Our deliveries are made by Talon Terra employees, not third-party carriers. Our production floor employees must develop multi-skills within 2-3 years of their hire date. Talon’s required skills include operating soil harvesting equipment, operating soil transport trucks, preparing soil mixes, operating automatic soil packaging equipment, loading delivery trucks, staging product pallets, and driving delivery trucks.

By the time a bag reaches your store, it’s already passed through the hands of the people who know it best. That’s how we maintain quality, consistency, and delivery timelines.
